A worker at a freight port has died, the company running the site has confirmed.

AV Dawson, which operates Middlesbrough Port, said the fatality occurred on Monday morning at its site on the River Tees but has not released further details.

North East Ambulance Service sent medics to the scene at about 09:30 GMT and the Health and Safety Executive said it was working with Cleveland Police to establish what had happened.

An AV Dawson spokesperson said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the individual's family and friends and with all our colleagues at this incredibly difficult time."

In a statement, the company added: "Our health and safety team are on site and cooperating fully with the emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive as they investigate the incident."

The BBC has approached Cleveland Police for comment.

AV Dawson conducts freight logistics and port operations at its 40-hectare facility based on the River Tees.

The group supports manufacturing supply chains by handling and moving freight and has been operating for 80 years.
