A teenager's face was seriously injured when the taxi he was travelling in was hit by "a large brick or a stone", police said.

It happened on Marton Road in Middlesbrough just before 19:30 GMT on Sunday.

Cleveland Police said children were throwing stones at passing vehicles, causing extensive damage to a number of them.

The back of the taxi window was also struck and the boy was hit on the bridge of the nose.

"We would therefore ask parents and carers to educate their children on the damage and consequences of throwing stones which is not just "messing around" or anti-social behaviour but can cause serious injury as well as costly damage to vehicles," a police spokesperson said.

The teenager needed hospital treatment, but has since been discharged.
