The coastguard and lifeboat went to the aid of a Dutch yacht after it suffered a power failure and lost all contact.

Guernsey Ports said it received a distress call at 04:40 BST from the vessel which was 11 nautical miles south of the island, before it lost communication with the yacht at 05:40.

Lifeboat crews were able to locate the vessel at 07:08 from its reported position and escorted it along with three passengers to St Peter Port Harbour.

Guernsey Ports said it was an "excellent example of multi-agency cooperation ensuring the safety of those in distress".

It said the yacht, which was travelling to Brest, initially made contact with CROSS Jobourg, the French Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

Coordination was transferred to Guernsey Ports who made direct communication and established the number of passengers onboard and its location.

Jersey Coastguard collaborated, and the Channel Islands Air Search was put on standby.
