Two men who shot and stabbed a man in Doncaster before trying to hide the weapon in a rabbit hutch have each been jailed for 30 years.

Tony Reckless, 46, and Jarvis Shields, 23, were convicted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm following a shooting on Abbott Street in Hexthorpe that left a man fighting for his life.

The court heard the pair had lured the victim into the street before shooting him three times and stabbing him.

Both men were jailed at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday.

A third defendant, Lisa Nixon, was found not guilty of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

Police said the victim had been found with serious injuries to his chest and leg at about 23:00 GMT on 17 October 2024.

CCTV footage showed two men leaving a Ford Focus on Hexthorpe Road shortly before the shooting.

The car was tracked and stopped in the Bentley area several hours after the attack and Reckless was arrested.

Police searched a property linked to Reckless, where they found a gun in a garden rabbit hutch along with blood-stained clothing, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

CCTV footage also identified Shields pulling the trigger of the gun at the scene, trying to reload the weapon and then dropping ammunition on the floor.

He then fired twice more at the victim, causing near fatal injuries, the court heard.

Reckless was identified as being the man with Shields, who slashed the victim.

Shields was arrested on 1 November 2024.

Both men, of no fixed address, were convicted in November 2025.

Sentencing, the Recorder of Sheffield Judge Jeremy Richardson KC said Shields and Reckless were "jointly responsible".

"You both intended that the victim be killed, he very nearly died," he told the men.

"He owes his life in fact almost certainly to the brisk actions of the ambulance crew who took him directly to the major trauma unit."

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said it was through "pure luck" that the victim did not die.
