Food market set to relocate to new city development

A street food market is set to reopen in a new city centre location as its former factory site is set to be demolished to make way for a housing development.

Bustler Market in Derby operated from The Chocolate Factory site in John Street from 2020 but moved away from the the space in December to make way for the Castleward regeneration scheme.

Bustler plans to open a "hub of independent street food, micro-restaurants, lifestyle and retail units" at the new outdoor development in St James' Yard between Derby's Sadler Gate and St James's Street.

The new site is hoped to be open by late spring 2026, a spokesperson for Bustler added.

Bustler Market began at Derby Bus Station in 2017 and moved to The Chocolate Factory in 2020.

City council planners said they were working on planning for the fifth phase of the residential redevelopment scheme, which included the Bustler Market site.

Castleward is a £100m "urban village" redevelopment of largely industrial land between Derby Midland Railway Station and the city centre, which has been ongoing in phases since it was approved in 2012.

The development will be constructed from more than 20 shipping containers across two levels, with gallery walkways and large seating areas.

Bustler said the site will "bring new life" and footfall to the city's Cathedral Quarter.

"We're so excited to finally announce this," said Andy Darke, operations manager of Bustler Market.

"St James Yard is an incredible opportunity to use our experience and bring a neglected space back into use and create another reason for people to visit and stay in the city centre, a destination that feels genuinely futureproof and exciting for Derby."
