New bin depot expected by summer
Guildford Borough CouncilA new bin depot in Guildford is due to be completed by the summer, according to the borough council.
Construction of the £38.4m depot in the Weyside Urban Village development is running to schedule and will lead to more efficient and environmentally friendly services, said council leader Julia McShane.
The depot, which is expected to be completed in July, will also allow housing to be built on the current site in Woking Road, which will close.
McShane said: "It has given us an opportunity to design and build a new depot that will enable us to deliver essential services more efficiently and reduce environmental impact."
The new depot, which will come into operation later in the year, features three buildings including offices, training facilities and space for Guildford's museum archive.
Structural works have been completed on the project's multi-storey car park, while landscaping works are due to begin soon according to the council.
Patrick Murphy, director of contractor's McLaren Construction, said: "You can already get a sense of how big a team and how many of the council's services can be accommodated together here.
"Some of the features that make this a step change in facilities are already in place, such as charging infrastructure for a future fleet of council vehicles.
"The site's capabilities will really come to life as we connect water and electricity supplies over the next few months."
Planning permission was given for the depot in June 2024.
It forms part of the Weyside Urban Village project which aims to build 1,500 new homes on brownfield land near Woking Road.
