Tree fell due to waterlogged ground, council says
Will GreenA council investigation into a tree that fell and landed on a car in Coventry has found waterlogged ground was the likely cause.
The tree fell on Kenilworth Road, close to the War Memorial Park car park, at about 16:30 GMT on Thursday, with footage shared with the BBC showing it had trapped a white car.
Coventry City Council said it was pleased no one was injured and the tree was considered to be healthy when it was last inspected on 18 June.
A council spokesperson said an inspection on Friday had identified that the likely cause of the fall was "waterlogging and a subsequent lack of soil strength".
The local authority added it had also inspected surrounding trees, to ensure they did not pose an unacceptable level of risk.
"We carry out routine programmed tree inspections in order to ensure safety whilst maximising the many benefits provided by the city's wide range of trees," it added.
