People are being urged to join an honorary police service to help fill vacancies and support communities.

The service in Jersey is looking for more volunteers to help with tasks including speed and road checks and assisting with searches for missing people searches.

Danny Scaife, chef de police for the Parish of St Helier, said: "We could do with a lot more - I think all parishes are a little bit short."

The role is elected and honorary police serve a three-year term in their parish, with rotas fitting round their jobs and potential volunteers should contact their parish office to find out more.

It is thought there are about 180 volunteers involved in the service across the island's 12 parishes.

Mr Scaife said the role was very rewarding and highlights included helping people "get back on the straight and narrow" and policing Jersey's large events.

He said the role could be a stepping stone to joining the regular police.
