Plans to build data centre at Drax power station
PA MediaA data centre containing powerful computers used to run digital services could be built at the Drax power station site near Selby, according to a planning application.
Proposals for two buildings totalling around 4,960 sq metres have been submitted to North Yorkshire Council by Drax Power Limited.
The centre would be built to the north of the power station on land currently used for storage.
Under the plans, the data centres would be three storeys tall and a sprinkler plant room and tank, access roads, loading bays and parking would also be built.
Planning documents said the development was "major in scale" but would not result in "significant or complex effects on the environment," according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Data centres are giant warehouses full of computers used to run digital services from movie streaming to online banking - there are currently an estimated 477 of them in the UK.
The rise in the use of AI has resulted in an increased demand for new data centres.
