A new councillor has taken charge of services for children, families and education at a Reform UK-controlled authority.

Michael Stratton has been appointed cabinet member at West Northamptonshire Council after Kathryn Shaw stepped down earlier this month after eight months in the role.

Stratton, the councillor for Northampton's Upton ward, has lived in the town for more than 40 years during which time he served as the vice-chair of the board of governors at St Luke's School.

Thanking Shaw for "all her great work", Stratton said he was "proud and privileged to be serving our communities in this key role".

"I will continue to build upon [her work] to drive forward better outcomes for children, young people and families across West Northants," he said.

Council leader Mark Arnull added: "I would like to warmly welcome Michael into his new cabinet role, as he leads on a portfolio of services that I know he has a real passion and knowledge for as we continue our work to make West Northants a great place to live, work and thrive."
