About 6,000 patients are expected to be tested at the new facility in the next year

A new endoscopy unit intended to shorten waiting times and support earlier diagnosis has opened.

The Community Diagnostic Centre, based in West Swindon Health Centre, opened on 25 November and about 6,000 patients are expected to receive treatment there in the next year.

It is the third centre to be opened by the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) since 2023 and is designed to relieve pressure on Swindon's Great Western Hospital.

Dr Barry Coakley, deputy chief medical officer for BSW ICB, said the new facility would reduce "anxiety" for patients while also providing faster care.

"When a patient receives the news that their symptoms could be the early warning signs of something serious, it can be extremely distressing, and can leave them feeling worried," he added.

Dr Coakley said patients will be able to begin treatments faster thanks to the new centre

"If actions need to be taken, treatment is able to begin quicker, which we know can lead to improved rates of recovery and, most importantly, people having more time with their friends and loved ones," he added.

The unit will provide endoscopies - a test which uses a tube with a thin camera to examine inside the body - as well as MRI and CT scans.

Dr Ajeya Shetty, endoscopy lead at the Great Western Hospital, said the centre will "significantly" boost the hospital's capacity to deliver "timely, high-quality endoscopic care".

"By moving services closer to patients, we can shorten waiting times, support earlier diagnosis and improve outcomes across our community," he added.
