A motorist who ran over and badly injured a woman, leaving tyre marks on her clothes, has been banned from driving and handed a suspended jail sentence.

Tuan Anh Nguyen, 26, was driving a Jaguar in Stainburn, near Workington in Cumbria, on 8 September when he ran over a woman who was attempting to report his dangerous driving.

At Carlisle Crown Court, the woman described the "agony" she was left in after he ran over her leg and hip before speeding off. Recorder Julian Shaw described Nguyen's driving as "extraordinarily dangerous".

Nguyen admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident, failing to provide a breath specimen and having no insurance.

The court heard how a husband and a wife were travelling in a taxi in Stainburn when they saw a Jaguar car that "shot out" of a road, almost causing an accident.

"At Stainburn roundabout the Jaguar was almost scraping along metal railings at the side of the road," prosecutor Matthew Hopkins said.

The car then pulled on to the opposite carriageway before speeding off, the court heard.

'Revved engine'

After the taxi driver called police, the male passenger suggested he follow the Jaguar to take more details and both cars stopped at Moor Rood.

The court heard how the husband got out of the taxi, intending to grab the driver's keys, with the woman following with the intention of getting him back into the taxi.

She was standing by the bonnet of the car when the Nguyen "revved" the Jaguar's engine, "sped up and the car collided with her".

The court heard how Nguyen continued to drive, knocking her on to her back and then driving over her.

As a result, she suffered a pelvic fracture, a blood clot in her abdomen and concussion.

The Jaguar was later found abandoned and Nguyen, who refused to take a breath test, was detained and gave false details to the police.

Recorder Shaw said Nguyen had shown a "clear disregard for the safety of both the husband and wife".

Nguyen, of Cherry Tree Drive, Stainburn, was handed a suspended two-year jail term, a 120-day alcohol ban and a three-year driving ban.

He was also ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work, pass an extended driving test to regain his licence and pay the woman £600 in compensation.
