Extra safety patrols are taking place after an unknown man tried to pick up a child from a Jersey primary school.

Head of Grouville School, Nichola Turner, told parents earlier this week about the "very concerning incident" on Monday afternoon - in which a man approached a Year 6 boy and said "I know your mum and I've come to pick you up".

Mark Labey, Connetable of Grouville, said Jersey Police had agreed to extra honorary and community officers patrolling the area.

The parish constable said it was "important not to spread fear amongst the pupils" but "a watchful eye is necessary in the days to come to ensure that a message goes out to anyone who thinks this sort of behaviour is acceptable".

The constable said he had met the school head. "The school are reacting in a measured way to this incident and have done all the relevant communications that they see fit.

"Let us all hope that this incident is not repeated and that our young people feel safe and protected in the school environment here and all around the island," he added.
