Police have asked parents and carers to remind their children not to engage with strangers

Families have been asked to be extra careful after an unknown man tried to pick up a child from a Jersey primary school.

Nichola Turner, the head of Grouville School, told parents about the "very concerning incident" in which a man approached a Year 6 boy on Monday afternoon and told them "I know your mum and I've come to pick you up".

She said the child had responded "responsibly and firmly with, 'No, thank you', which caused the man to leave quickly".

Jersey Police said they were investigating and asked parents and carers to continue to remind children not to engage with strangers and to ask for help from an adult they trusted if they felt unsafe.

A spokesperson for the police said: "States of Jersey Police are investigating a report that a year 6 boy was approached at the junction of La Rue de la Haye du Puits and La rue Maraval (Grouville School) on Monday 2 February at 14:57 hours by a male."

They said the man was white, in his 40s, about 5ft 9in (1.8m) tall and was bald and clean shaven.

He had been wearing a black beanie hat, a knee-length navy or black winter coat and tight fluorescent jogging leggings.

They said it appeared to have been an isolated case but officers would patrol the area throughout the day.

The spokesperson appealed to the man to contact the police and asked any witnesses to the incident or drivers with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
