New parking charges to be introduced in six towns
GoogleDrivers will soon have to pay to park in areas that are currently free in six Calderdale towns.
A number of changes to parking rules will be implemented early this year across Brighouse, Elland, Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden.
Calderdale Council said the move would help free up spaces in busy areas and make parking more consistent. Plans include new charges on streets and in car parks, longer charging hours in busy towns, and shorter hours in quieter ones.
A council spokesperson said: "Charging for parking helps us manage spaces and any surplus will fund car park repairs and highways maintenance."
Hebden Bridge will have new on-street charges and capped rates.
Elland will have shorter charging hours ending at 18:00 GMT instead of 20:00.
Brighouse, Hailfax, Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden will have a review of long-stay rates and capped rates.
The council said higher tariffs for short stays in central areas would encourage turnover, while cheaper long-stay parking slightly further out would suit people staying for work or leisure.
Councillor Sarah Courtney said towns such as Hebden Bridge were often very busy and Brighouse had seen a 3.8% rise in footfall compared with 2024. She said Elland would benefit from shorter charging hours to support its evening economy.
The first changes will be introduced in early 2026, with others following once legal orders are in place.
Income from charges will fund the council's parking service, support highways maintenance, and investment in parking technology.
More details about car parks, on-street parking and tariffs are available on Calderdale Council's website.
