Roof installation begins on new leisure centre

Installation of a "distinctive" roof has begun at a new sports centre.

Work on the Trowbridge Leisure Centre in Wiltshire is due to be completed by the end of 2026 at a cost of £25m.

Designers of the building's new roof have taken design inspiration from the mills which once formed part of the town's thriving textile and industrial heritage.

Mel Jacob, of Wiltshire Council, said: "The design celebrates Trowbridge's industrial roots, with pitched roof forms inspired by the cotton mills that were central to the town's history. We're delighted to see such progress as we head into Christmas."

The leisure centre, on Bythesea Road opposite Wiltshire Council's headquarters, will look similar in design to a nearby M&S Foodhall, as part of a move to celebrate the town's heritage in new buildings.

Ms Jacob added: "This blend of heritage and modern leisure facilities will create a space that is not only functional but iconic - a building that reflects our past while supporting healthier, more active lifestyles for the future."

The development is scheduled to open by the end of 2026 and the council promises it will include a six-lane 25m swimming pool, a learner pool and a gym with 120 exercise studios once finished.

Once installation work on the roof is complete, the next phase of work will see flooring laid down and plumbing systems implemented.
