Plans for a new training facility at a Ministry of Defence (MoD) site have been approved.

An application to transform former hangars at MoD Lyneham, Wiltshire, into a facility to train servicemen and women on specialist military vehicle maintenance were lodged in July.

The new building will be located towards the centre of the site and will be built by Kier Construction.

Wiltshire Council planners were told no heritage assets would be affected by the work at the base and granted permission on 24 December.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), the proposed works form part of Project Tellus, which hopes to create a number of new buildings and refurbish existing buildings at the site - providing new accommodation, training and amenity facilities.

The military base dates back to the 1930s and became the Royal Air Force's (RAF) principal transport base, playing host to the Hercules aircraft fleet from the 1960s until 2011.
