A man was arrested after a town in Nottinghamshire was cordoned off and schools were locked down.

Armed officers were sent to an address in Queen Street in Southwell shortly before 12:00 GMT on Friday after concern's for the man's safety and reports of damage being caused.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers spent several hours "speaking to the man and trying to resolve the situation".

A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

The force said four schools went into precautionary lockdowns while police ensured the area was safe.

Ch Supt Nick Waldram said: "The initial unconfirmed report suggested an individual might be in possession of a weapon and therefore armed officers were initially deployed as a precaution.

"They were stood down when no weapon was found on the person or within the property."
