A beach remains closed while bomb disposal experts deal with "historic unexploded ordnances", the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

Eskmeals, near Ravenglass, in Cumbria, has been closed since 19 February.

An MoD spokesperson said: "An explosive ordnance disposal team continues its safety-critical work at Eskmeals Beach, where operations remain ongoing following the discovery of historic unexploded ordnances."

A safety cordon had been placed around the site by the Millom Coastguard Rescue Team. It is unclear when the beach will reopen to the public.

Ordnance like artillery shells periodically wash up on beaches across the country.

The beach is also close to a military firing range.

HM Coastguard said warning flags had been raised by the local firing range manager to protect the public.
