Pensioner's winter kits helping others stay warm

A Grimsby pensioner has been handing out kit containing gloves, hot water bottles and basic groceries to those affected by cuts to universal winter fuel payments.

Frank Sparkes, 77, who is also known for his efforts cleaning up litter around the Lincolnshire town, said he and his family felt they they needed to do something to help.

Millions of pensioners will lose winter fuel payments under changes being brought in by the government, which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer insisted were necessary.

Mr Sparkes said: "I'm not going to get into the politics, but this is our way of helping."

In a move that has angered some MPs, unions and charities, the government has said future payments would only be made to those getting pension credit or other means-tested help.

Mr Sparkes said he and his son felt compelled to help after hearing about the decision.

He praised all those who had helped with the scheme, including staff at St Martin's Church, which was a drop-off point for items.

Mr Sparkes said: "We've had some fantastic donations. It's been hard work but we've enjoyed it - helping people."

In addition to his latest good deed, he has worked to keep the area around Immingham's North Wall sea defences tidy.
