A former consultant who was previously found guilty of gross misconduct has been stripped of his Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour.

Nigel Timothy James O'Connor used to work at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) from 1989 until he was dismissed from his role in 2022.

In an official public record listing, it was confirmed that the King has directed that O'Connor's MBE, which was awarded in the 2015 Birthday Honours list, "shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the register."

The BBC has contacted SaTH for comment, the nature of his dismissal has not been publicly released.

O'Connor, who was initially given the accolade for his services to haematology, was one of nine people who were stripped of an MBE.

The Cabinet Office confirmed that he is among the list of recipients who forfeited the honour on the grounds of professional censure in March.

Following his sacking, O'Connor took the NHS Trust to a tribunal for unfair dismissal in 2023, but the claim was struck out.

From August 2024, he was no longer registered to practice, according to the General Medical Council.

While working as a consultant haematologist at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, he set up the Shropshire Blood Trust charity. The O'Connor Suite, a Haematology Unit, was named after him.
