Roadworks expected to end in September
Durham County CouncilPreparatory work along a busy road is set to start this week ahead of an anticipated eight months of construction and alterations.
The A690 between Neville's Cross, just outside Durham City, and Crook will see several changes including traffic lights, a pop-up park and ride facility, bus shelters and a pedestrian crossing.
The work, part of a £2.94m scheme, is currently expected to be completed by September.
Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport Tim McGuinness said: "Inevitably, with any work to the highway network, there will be a level of disruption to the public, but we will seek to minimise this wherever possible."
Work begins this week around the A690's junction with St John's Road at Meadowfield where the new traffic lights and pop-up park and ride will be located.
It will see the removal of non-protected trees during off-peak times over three days.
The Reform-run council said new ones would be planted in "due course".
A short section of footpath will be closed during this work, with diversion signs in place.
Utility works will then start on 2 February and run for up to four months with traffic management in place, with construction expected to begin in May.
The shared walking and cycling path between East View at Helmington Row and Carville Terrace at Willington will also be a focus of work.
A new traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing will be introduced on Church Street, Crook, near to Dawson Street, replacing the existing pedestrian island.
The project is funded by the Department for Transport.
