Stranded porpoise rescued from Guernsey coast

A stranded porpoise has been rescued on the coast of Guernsey, the GSPCA has said.

The charity said it received reports on Sunday night of the "extremely weak" animal repeatedly trying to swim towards the shore near Vale Castle.

Head of marine mammals Geoff George found the porpoise in a very poor condition and sought urgent veterinary support after it made no attempts to head back out to sea.

The GSCPA said a decision was made to move the porpoise to one of the island's bathing pools after assessing the "difficult situation".

George said: "We did everything we could to stabilise it, refloat it and give it the best possible chance with veterinary support.

"Moving it to the bathing pool allowed us to monitor it safely through the night.

"These cases are always challenging, but we remain hopeful, and we ask the public to report any sightings straight away."

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said the type of stranding was "rare but incredibly emotional and demanding".

He added: "If anyone ever sees a dolphin, porpoise, seal, or any marine animal in distress, please call the GSPCA straight away - the sooner we know, the better the chances of helping them."

The GSPCA said it was continuing to monitor the situation closely and encouraged islanders to stay vigilant along the coastline.
