Greater Manchester Police said an investigation was continuing

An 80-year-old man has been arrested after a 95-year-old woman was tied-up and threatened during an attempted robbery in Salford.

The man was arrested earlier in Manchester Road, Worsley, on suspicion of attempted robbery and false imprisonment, Greater Manchester Police said.

He remained in custody for questioning, the force said.

It is believed a man entered the woman's property in Little Hulton on Tuesday, tied her hands together, and asked for cash and her purse.

While police previously said that the man offered to clean the woman's windows, detectives now think he asked about bin collection day.

The man was disrupted when another woman who knew the victim arrived at the house where she was grabbed, before the suspect fled.

No injuries were reported and the victim was being supported by officers.

"When this report came in to us yesterday, we were shocked by the very nature of it," Det Insp Paul Davies said.

"I am glad that we now have someone arrested in connection with this incident and inquiries remain ongoing.

"I would ask the community to not speculate in order to allow the criminal justice process to run its proper course."
