Temperatures are expected to remain cold over the next month

A yellow cold weather warning has been issued for a large part of England and Wales on Friday, including the West Midlands region.

Snow and ice is expected as temperatures fall, the Met Office said. It said travel disruption was likely and warned people to take extra care, particularly on untreated roads and pavements.

The weather warning covers from 00:00 GMT on Friday until midday.

It comes soon after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) upgraded its cold-weather alert to amber, highlighting the dangers of cold weather, particularly for those with health conditions who are aged 65 and over.

The UKHSA alert runs until 12:00 on 5 January, as temperatures are forecast to remain low in the coming days, after what has been a generally mild few months.

November in the Midlands saw a mean temperature of 1C above average for the month, while there was 141mm of rain - 175% of the average for November.

What are cold weather health alerts?

In its monthly outlook, BBC Weather said winter would "squarely bite us at the start of 2026", with temperatures dropping a few degrees below average early in the new year.

Other consequences of cold weather include temperatures inside hospitals and care homes dropping below the levels recommended for assessing health risks, and challenges for people keeping indoor temperatures at the recommended 18C, the UKHSA said.

However, milder weather is expected to return in less than a fortnight.
