Portsmouth City Council says cleaning standards were "poor" at Kens Fried Chicken

A fried chicken takeaway has been shut down after a "serious" mouse infestation was discovered.

The findings were made at Kens Fried Chicken on Commercial Road in Portsmouth by Environmental Health Officers during a routine inspection on 18 February.

Officers discovered mouse droppings on worktops and beside bags of flour used to coat chicken, as well as structural defects that allowed mice to access the premises.

The business was closed immediately due to the "imminent risk to public health" and an order confirming the closure was granted by Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on 20 February.

The Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order prevents the business from reopening until the infestation is eradicated and hygiene standards are improved.

Portsmouth City Council described the mouse infestation as "serious".

Officers discovered mouse droppings on shelves, worktops and cooling racks, and next to bags of flour used to coat chicken and near bottled water.

Structural defects, including holes in the roof, gaps under the front doors and an insecure rear door, were also identified.

The council said that cleaning standards were "poor", despite previous advice from the pest controller.

Councillor Lee Hunt, cabinet member for community safety, leisure and sport, said the level of mouse activity identified "posed a clear and immediate risk to public health" and that immediate closure was "necessary".
