Flood barriers go up in Shrewsbury

Flood barriers have gone up in the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury following heavy rainfall.

Shropshire Council said Frankwell Riverside car park was partially closed but the exit from the main car park remained open.

The Environment Agency (EA) has installed phase one of the defences.

On Friday afternoon, Shropshire had one flood warning in place and 14 flood alerts.

The EA's Chris Bainger told BBC Radio Shropshire the barriers were being erected as a "precautionary measure".

He added all bodies of water around Shropshire including the Severn, Cound Brook and River Tern were "very full".

He encouraged people to recognise flood warnings and not take risks around water.

Barriers have not yet had to go up in Ironbridge, the EA said.
