Dog faeces have been found in several child play areas as park equipment has been damaged by bite marks.

Somerset's Bridgwater Town Council said it was "disappointed" that owners had taken their pets into play areas, despite clear "no dogs" signage at park entrances.

Councillor Tim Mander, chair of the amenities committee, warned misusing parks in this way puts young people at risk.

He said: "It is extremely disappointing to see them being misused in ways that put young people at risk."

CCTV footage captured five dogs with their owners and a child inside Victoria Park, with paw prints left on play equipment and faeces left behind.

Similar scenes were found at the gated play areas on Marsa Way and Chamberlain Avenue.

Dog faeces can pose a serious health risk to children, and can lead to the condition toxocariasis, caused by worms in the poo.

At Bower Ponds, the council said flat swing seats have been found damaged by dog bite marks and they will need to be replaced.

A swinging rope ride has also been removed after damage caused by dogs.

Council leaders said the children's play equipment was being used as a dog agility area by some pet owners.

Mander added: "We fully appreciate how much these facilities are valued by the community and we are committed to protecting them.

"We are asking all residents to respect the rules in place and to support us in keeping these spaces clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone."
