Residents are being urged to think carefully about what they take to the tip after the discovery of an old artillery shell prompted an evacuation.

Beverley Household Waste Recycling Site, on Weel Road, was evacuated at 16:30 GMT on Sunday after staff found the munition in a skip meant for electrical items, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

An explosives team arrived three hours later and confirmed it was a decommissioned shell before removing it from the site. Police were also called.

A council spokesperson said: "We would urge people with any munitions to contact police for disposal advice, as any would need to be certified, rather than taking them to a household waste recycling site."
