Climber seriously injured by loose rock

A climber suffered significant injuries when she was hit by a falling rock in the Lake District.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) said a man was climbing a route called The Shroud on Black Crag, Borrowdale, when a block from an overhang came off and hit his female climbing partner on Saturday at about 10:20 BST.

The woman, who was below him on a ledge about 13m (42ft) from the ground, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Keswick MRT urged climbers to avoid the area because of another large loose block on the route which it "considered dangerous".

Another climber who was positioned at the bottom of the crag was also hit and hurt by the rock, although their injuries were minor, it added.

The male climber abseiled himself and his climbing partner to the base of the crag as the mountain rescue teams arrived.

A total of 21 mountain rescue volunteers assisted in the call-out.

The volunteer team returned to Black Crag to retrieve climbing gear and assessed the climb.
