Tributes paid to 'brave' former rugby player
Coventry Rugby ClubTributes have been paid to a "brave and inspiring" former Coventry rugby player who has died two-and-a-half years after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Matt Gallagher died on Sunday 8 March, said his family in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
The former rugby player set up the Matt Gallagher Foundation after he was diagnosed in October 2023, to raise money to support people living with MND as well as their families.
His family said they were "heartbroken" by the news that their "devoted husband, loving father and unbelievable role model" had died.
They said through the foundation, more than £1.6m was raised to support over 100 families with relatives suffering with MND.
The post said: "His courage and compassion inspired everyone who knew him, showing us what it truly means to live with kindness at the very heart of who you are."
Through the Foundation, Matt brought people together, raised awareness for MND, and supported over 100 families, all while facing his own battles with remarkable bravery.
"We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported the Foundation and shown so much love. This is more than a legacy, it is the mark of a true hero.
"We love you Dad and we will carry you in our hearts forever, sleep tight."
HandoutGallagher began playing at Solihull Rugby Club at the age of five, going on to play for the Birmingham Bees' first team by the age of 18.
He continued his career with his Polytechnic team at Sheffield Hallam, where he won the British Polytechnic Cup twice, and Nottingham Rugby Club, playing in the Championship at the age of 20.
He then signed for Coventry RFC in 1996, playing more than 100 games for the team before leaving in 2001 - before concluding his rugby career at Birmingham and Solihull. He retired in 2003.
His former clubs paid tribute after his death, with Birmingham and Solihull RFC saying they were "deeply saddened" by the news.
A tribute said: "Matt was a valued member of the B&S family and rugby more widely and will be remembered fondly by teammates, friends, and all who knew him around the club.
"His courage and determination in the face of motor neurone disease inspired many."
Birmingham & Solihull RFCCoventry Rugby Club said Gallagher's connection with the club spanned far beyond his time on the field.
They said: "Despite facing his own battle with extraordinary courage, Matt devoted his energy to supporting others.
"His compassion, determination and unwavering positivity created a network of hope for so many people during the most difficult of times.
"Everyone at Coventry Rugby sends their heartfelt condolences to Matt's family, friends and all those connected with the Matt Gallagher Foundation at this incredibly difficult time.
"He will be greatly missed across the rugby community."
The club will pay its respects with a minute's silence at Friday's fixture against the Army Rugby Union.
