Investigation launched after man dies in flat fire

Emergency services were called to St John's Walk in York on Thursday afternoon

A man has died following a fire at a block of flats in York, prompting a joint police and fire service investigation.

North Yorkshire Police said reports of a "small fire" came in at about 13:00 GMT on Thursday in St John's Walk, Heworth.

While tackling the fire, crews found an unconscious man and passed him into the care of paramedics.

The man died on his way to hospital, the force said. His next of kin has been informed.

A police cordon remains in place while inquiries continue at the scene, with an investigation examining the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Those with information have been asked to contact police on 101.
