A man has appeared in court after a woman in her 80s was found dead in a freezer.

South Wales Police attended a house in Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl, on Tuesday following concerns about the welfare of an elderly woman.

Officers discovered the body of the woman, who was not identified in court, on arrival at the premises in a large freezer.

Christopher Phillips, 60, from Porthcawl appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial.

He also faces a charge of fraud by false representation.

During a short hearing, Mr Phillips spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address.

He was remanded in custody, and will next appear in Cardiff Crown Court on 20 March.
