Engineering plans for empty university building
University of WolverhamptonA university has been given permission to redevelop part of its site, to house an engineering centre.
A vacant building at the University of Wolverhampton's Springfield Campus will be stripped, reconfigured inside and extended to provide the new teaching space.
The work is due to be completed by the end of the year, allowing the university to relocate teaching from its current engineering centre in Telford, Shropshire.
That campus is due to close this year as part of what the university called a "multi-year estates masterplan", concentrating the university's resources within Wolverhampton.
The university said the building on Grimstone Street would be designed to "showcase its innovation".
It had to get listed building consent because of the historic importance of the building.
Dr Pete Cross, from the University of Wolverhampton, said: "This approval allows us to preserve and sensitively enhance an important heritage building while creating modern, flexible teaching and learning spaces for our students and partners."
The university also has planning approval for the redevelopment of four brownfield sites, collectively known as Six Mile Green, close to its science park.
