Nine newborn puppies have been found abandoned in a cardboard box.

The puppies were found in Kirton Marsh, near Boston, Lincolnshire, and were taken to the Sutterton branch of the South Lincs Vet Group.

"Our thoughts are not only with these vulnerable puppies but also with their mother, whose welfare remains a serious concern," the group said.

"If [you are] the previous keeper of these puppies and still have the mother, please know that support is available to you and the mother."

It added: "There are charities that can take her into care and help reunite her with her pups."

The vet group said it was looking to place the puppies, which were believed to be about three or four days old, in foster homes before finding them "the loving, permanent homes they deserve".
