A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pedestrian was hit by a van.

Cumbria Police said the 29-year-old man from Carlisle was in police custody.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was in hospital in a critical but stable condition, the force added.

The crash happened at about 14:50 GMT on Sunday in the Prescott Road area of Carlisle.

A police spokesman said officers were still in the area conducting inquiries.

They said: "Officers are particularly keen for anyone who was in the Prescott Road area, and surrounding areas, at the time of the incident to check any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage which may be relevant to the investigation."
