Cameras have been installed to stop unauthorised vehicles accessing historic parts of a city.

Restrictions mean people cannot drive through sections of Eastgate Street, Westgate Street, Northgate Street and Southgate Street in Gloucester without a permit.

However, Gloucestershire County Council said it had received numerous complaints from businesses, police, councillors and members of the public about drivers ignoring restrictions and causing road safety issues.

Automatic number plate recognition cameras have now been installed and turned on, with drivers caught breaking the rules set to befined £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

While the restrictions are temporary, the council said they could remain in place until 4 July 2027.

Permits have been issued to traders in the area so they do not receive fines.

Gloucester City councillor Rebecca Trimnell previously said she was "delighted" cameras were being installed.

"We are many steps closer to finally tackling those individuals who feel it's their right to just park on the gate streets in the evening and use them as a through road," she added.

"Enforcement finally happening on the gate streets is a good thing for everyone - including for the health and safety of pedestrians."
