Festive revellers have been warned to continue checking rail journeys over new year with amended services and bank holiday changes affecting train travel in the West Midlands.

National Rail said there would be be amended late-night services on New Year's Eve because of overnight engineering work in the Duddeston area of Birmingham.

Trains across the region are also affected by bank holiday service changes on New Year's Day, the National Rail website said.

Engineering works and upgrades are taking place across the network over the festive period. National Rail said it was because fewer people usually travelled by train.

National Rail said the changes made on New Year's Eve will be after 22:00 GMT, when overnight engineering work begins.

Services affected include trains from Lichfield Trent Valley to Redditch and Bromsgrove, and trains from Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley to Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

'Early shutdown'

West Midlands Railway warned of rail replacement buses overnight on New Year's Eve between Birmingham and Lichfield Trent Valley/Tame Bridge Parkway.

Both Avanti West Coast and Transport for Wales warned of an early shutdown on 31 December, with trains stopping running earlier than usual.

Continuing engineering work on 1 January will see a reduced timetable on all Avanti West Coast routes.

Services affected by bank holiday changes on New Year's Day were listed by National Rail.

They include trains to and from:

  • Birmingham and Walsall to Rugeley Trent Valley
  • Hereford to Birmingham New Street
  • Leamington Spa to Coventry and Nuneaton
  • Shrewsbury, Telford and Wolverhampton to Birmingham New Street
  • Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town

The service from Worcester Foregate and Kidderminister to Dorridge, Leamington Spa, Whitlocks End and Stratford-upon-Avon will have less frequent services and start later than normal, National Rail added.
