Oh sweet niblets - Hannah Montana fans say upcoming special will be the "perfect way" to mark the TV show's 20th anniversary.

Miley Cyrus will return to her Disney roots for the programme which will celebrate the series she starred in from 2006 to 2011.

As part of the special, the US pop star will sit down with Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper for an "intimate look" at the long-lasting impact of the character and to revisit some of the show's best bits.

The special will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and air on Disney+ in March.

BBC Newsbeat has been hearing from some of the star's biggest fans as the "Hannahversary" countdown begins.

"I grew up with Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana," says Darcy Davis.

The 20-year-old student, and self-confessed superfan, says Cyrus was "a really big part of my childhood".

"I remember I'd refuse to go to sleep until I watched Hannah Montana, I love her music now and I loved her music growing up," she adds.

She is now hoping for a world tour off the back of the anniversary special.

"I would sell a lung for that. That would be incredible," she says.

And while some fans have said they wanted Cyrus to reprise her role in a new episode, Davis feels the Disney+ special is the "perfect way" to celebrate 20 years.

"If it was an episode, I'd watch it. if it was a tour, I'd pay for the tickets," she says.

"And this Disney+ special, I will be watching it as well."

While the special won't be a traditional episode, fans have been told to expect "heartfelt nostalgia and a fresh perspective" from Cyrus.

Some of the most recognisable sets, including the Stewart family living room and Hannah Montana closet, will also be reconstructed.

Also braced for the throwback is fellow student Jack Bostock, who hails Hannah Montana as an "iconic" character.

"It's one of those things that you could watch now," the 24-year-old tells Newsbeat.

"You could watch it in five years, 10 years, 15 years, and it still has the same effect.

"Hannah Montana was, and is, still everywhere."

Spanning four seasons and two feature-films, the sitcom followed Miley Stewart, played by Cyrus, as she navigates living a double life as famous singer Hannah Montana.

Over the years, fans watched as Stewart balanced being a teenager in high school, her friendships and many bedazzled looks.

Life imitated art for Cyrus, who became a global pop star off the back of the show's success.

"I feel like I've been a consistent fan, so it's really nice to see that she wants to come back," says Davis.

She recalls also being "obsessed" with the character's wardrobe.

"I think about it most days," she jokes.

"Honestly, it's great. It's incredible. And obviously the outfits, like the sequined dress, and all the different formations of the blonde wig, I love it."

Davis and Bostock both broadcast at their university's radio station where they keep a life-size cut out of Cyrus – given to them after the singer surprised them live on BBC Radio 1 last year.

"We've kind of grown up together," said Cyrus of her fan base at the time.

"All of us really feel like we already connected and know each other in some way," she added.

Following the announcement of the 20-year special, Cyrus said Hannah Montana will "always be part" of who she is.

"The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I'm very proud of," says Cyrus.

"This 'Hannahversary' is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who've stood by me for 20 years."
