Budget supermarket Aldi has unveiled plans for a new £10m store on the edge of a market town.

The German firm hopes to build the new shop on land currently used as a motorcycle training facility, south of the A361 London Road in Devizes, Wiltshire.

The retailer said the site would create 40 new jobs and the proposals include 97 free car parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

It also said it was looking at ways locals could reach the site, which is almost two miles from the town centre, by walking or cycling.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, further jobs are likely to be created as part of a drive-through coffee shop, which is currently part of the plans.

Those plans suggest the main access to the proposed store would be off Horton Road, just past the former petrol station and car wash site.

The eastern part of the brownfield site has been assigned for employment land allocation by Wiltshire Council and for employment space in the Devizes community area strategy.

A public consultation by PRZM Real Estate and Aldi is currently open until 18 January, after which a planning application is expected to be lodged with Wiltshire Council.
