A 65-year-old man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a young girl in the 1990s.

Lloyd Burgess, of Sheep Street in Devizes, Wiltshire, was sentenced to 11 years when he appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Friday.

Police praised the "bravery of his victim" who the court heard was 11 when Burgess assaulted her, after she came forward to report his crimes in 2021.

Burgess previously appeared at the same court on 17 March where he pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault - a historic term replaced by the charge of sexual assault under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 - between October 1995 and October 1998.

Det Con Nicky Cross, of Wiltshire Police, said his victim had "enabled us to conduct an investigation into Burgess' offending and ensure he was put before the courts".

"This case should serve as an example to anyone who may have experienced this kind of ordeal that it is crucial you report this to police, regardless of how much time has since passed," Det Con Cross continued.

As well as the prison sentence, Burgess was given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and told to sign the Sex Offenders Register.
