Work will continue throughout spring and summer

The £2.5m revamp of a bus station is set to start next month.

Stanley Bus Station is being refurbished to improve safety and accessibility, with changes including new lighting and CCTV as well as a redesigned entrance.

Work will start on 7 April and is hoped to be completed in the autumn.

The station will remain fully operational throughout, but services will be operating from different stands while the upgrades take place.

Between 7 April and 9 April, bus stands F to K will be closed and all services will be instead operating from stands A to E.

From 10 April until the summer, stands A to E will be closed and all services will operate from stands F to K.

Users will be able to access and exit the station through the east entrance door during this time but public toilet facilities will be closed.

Durham County Council said the alternating system for bus stands would continue as refurbishment works take place from summer to autumn, with more details to be released at a later date.

Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport Tim McGuinness said the refurb would bring "vital improvements".

It is hoped the renovation will help make the facility safer after passengers previously reported concerns about anti-social behaviour.

The work was given the go-ahead after a successful £2.5m funding bid to the North East Combined Authority.
