Town bus station gets £2.5m for upgrades
GoogleA town bus station is to be upgraded after a successful £2.5m funding bid.
The entrance of Stanley bus station will be redesigned and the seating area and toilets will be improved.
It is hoped the renovation will help make the facility safer after passengers previously reported concerns about anti-social behaviour.
Durham County Council's cabinet member for rural, farming and transport Tim McGuinness said the funding would "go a long way" to help bring "vital improvements" to the station.
"These works will bring improved safety and better accessibility meaning more passengers will be able to use the station more easily," he added.
Plans include new lighting and CCTV as well as upgraded flooring to help passengers with visual impairments.
Spaces outside the building will also be revamped to make the site more accessible.
Funding to refurbish the station, which was built in 2005, comes from the North East Combined Authority (NECA).
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said it was good news "not just for bus passengers, but the whole town centre and its shops and cafes".
The project is set to be fully delivered by spring 2027.
