As Singapore turns 60, Carmen Roberts returns to the country of her birth to find out more about her Chinese Peranakan roots. In markets, museums and in the kitchens of family members, she travels through the city to discover a community that has survived trauma to take their place in the patchwork of cultures that make up the city- state.
