To sing Abide With Me on the pitch at Wembley, before a Challenge Cup final, would combine my two greatest interests outside my family: music and Rugby League.
I have coached over 1000 boys and girls.
Fifty years ago I sang in the Primary Schools Chritmas Concert in Leeds Town Hall and I represented my school team at Rugby League. So the seeds were planted! Since then I have sung in numerous concerts and events, and I have been a season ticket holder at Headingley for 50 years. For a number of years, I was also an active member of the Leeds Supporters Club.
Rugby League and music also played a large part in my teaching career. I ran school teams for 37 years, coached Leeds City representative sides for much of that time and also coached the Yorkshire under-13 side for a couple of years. I would estimate that I have coached over 1000 boys and girls – for the vast majority it was their introduction to the sport of Rugby League. I have also been involved in the administration of Schools’ Rugby League.
In retirement, I have continued my involvement with Schools’ RL – even still refereeing when nobody younger and fitter can be found! I am Club Welfare Officer at North Leeds Leopards Junior Club and a member of the Heritage Committee at Leeds Rhinos.
During my teaching career, I was happy to support more able musicians in running choirs and orchestras. I currently sing tenor in ‘Free Range’ – a Leeds-based “contemporary choir with a distinctive repertoire” – according to our website!
I have missed only two Challenge Cup finals since 1971. I have always joined in singing Abide With Me on the terraces and in the stand; to be able to experience this from the pitch would be truly amazing and unforgettable.
