Parades, rivers and the White House fountain: US celebrates St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day brought bagpipes, drums, and plenty of Irish pride to the streets of American cities like Boston and New York City. Meanwhile, over the weekend the Chicago River was dyed a bright emerald green, a tradition that begun in 1962. Organised by local plumbers, the eco-friendly, secret-formula powder turned the water green for several hours.

President Donald Trump took part in St Patrick's Day festivities himself, hosting Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin in the Oval Office.
