A 21-year-old man has been shot in west Belfast in what police have described as a "paramilitary-style assault".

The man was shot in the lower leg at Summerhill Road, Dunmurry, at about 22:25 BST on Wednesday, and taken to hospital for treatment.

A PSNI inspector said those responsible for the "barbaric act" do not represent the local community.

They said the attack was in a residential area, near a sports facility.

Det Insp Michael McDonnell said: "We believe two males, who were described as being of slim build and wearing dark clothing, were involved."

He appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn said the shooting happened near a hostel that is home to young families.

"The area around it was sealed off and it was a very distressing and frightening experience for them and other local residents," the west Belfast representative said.

"This is not what the people of this area want or need and those responsible must stop."
