Purifier installed at Salisbury Station to improve air quality

A train company is trialling the use of an air purifying column on a station platform to monitor pollution.

South Western Railway (SWR) has installed the device at Salisbury Station in an attempt to improve air quality for passengers.

If the trial is successful, SWR could install them at more of its stations.

SWR's Jessica Van Staden said: "The results of the trial... could have far reaching effects on how we improve air quality in our stations."

The air purifying column has been invented by Pluvo, which said it "draws in polluted air and blows out clean air".

Ms van Staden, SWR's senior sustainability manager said: "This partnership with Pluvo is very important to us as we investigate and trial new ways of improving our customers' journeys."

The column, on platform four, is interactive and includes a chat function to learn more about the station and offer feedback on the new installation.

Pluvo CEO, Matteo Maccario, said the column was able to filter out soot, gases and viruses.

"We're delighted to be working with SWR to improve the air quality at one of the South West's busiest stations," he added.
