Rail passengers are facing disruption on Monday morning caused by a broken-down freight train.

National Rail said the train has been moved and lines have since reopened following the incident between Winchester and Basingstoke but services may still be cancelled, delayed or revised.

The disruption, which is mainly affecting South Western Railway (SWR) passengers, is expected to last until 12:00 GMT.

The operator has offered advice for alternative services to customers. CrossCountry has said it does not believe there is "any significant impact" on its services as a result of the breakdown.

National Rail has said one line cannot be used into Basingstoke while the stricken GB Railfreight train awaits rescue, which may cause "a small delay whilst trains are worked around the failed train into platform 4".

Issues are affecting SWR services on routes between Weymouth, Poole, Southampton Central, Portsmouth Harbour and London Waterloo, as well as between Portsmouth Harbour and Woking.

CrossCountry has said its trains "may be subject to diversions between Winchester and Basingstoke which could cause a small amount of delay until the broken-down train is moved out of the way".
