The system was partially-suspended from 05:30 BST until just before midday in both directions

Part of the Tyne and Wear Metro had to be suspended earlier as a "structural defect" was found on a footbridge.

Trains between Hebburn and South Shields were unable to run as council engineers found corrosion when they removed cladding overnight. They have since resumed.

Emergency repairs were carried out on the structure in Monkton Terrace, Jarrow, which crosses the Metro line.

Operator Nexus and South Tyneside Council apologised.

Passengers were able to use local buses until a replacement bus was drafted in.

South Tyneside Council said the defect was found during its planned work on the bridge.

Teams from the local authority, contractors and engineers from Nexus worked on site working to resolve the issue.
